Brown v. Board of Education

The U.S. Supreme Court announces its unanimous ruling on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. This landmark decision determined that separate but equal was inherently unequal, and helped launch the Civil Rights Movement.

1958
July 19, 1958

Dockum Drug Store Sit-In

Members of the Wichita NAACP Youth Council planned and staged a sit-in at Dockum Drug Store in downtown Wichita. The first student-led sit-in in the nation, students sat down at the lunch counter and asked to be served. Finally on August 11 the store owner agreed to serve them.
