AMERICAN INDIAN HOMES IN KANSAS

Guided Tour - Grade 1

How did people find materials to build homes before there was a hardware store or lumberyard?

This tour introduces students to ways that Native Americans in Kansas bilt shelters using only natural resources found on the prairie.

In the museum they will compare and contrast construction techniques of a full-size Cheyenne tipi, a Wichita grass lodge, and a model of a Pawnee earth lodge.

In the museum classrooms they will set up a tipi, go inside for a "step into the past."
