CEDAR CREST - TOURS
Residence of the Governor of Kansas
Narrated tours of Cedar Crest are led by docents. Visitors will tour the first floor of the residence, which includes the living room, sunroom, library, dining room, breakfast room, and commercial kitchen.
On the tour docents reveal details about the architecture and original features of the residence; the original owners, Frank and Madge MacLennan; art collection featuring Kansas artist; first families; and improvements that have been made over time.
Natural symbols--thistles, roses, acorns, and oakleaves--were important to the design and are repeated throughout the residence--carved into the woodwork, in the stained glass windows, and in the raised relief ceiling in the dining room.
Mr. MacLennan’s love of books inspired the library. It features hand-carved oak cabinet doors with trademarks of first European printers and bookmakers. There are bookplates from his favorite authors, quotations from Shakespeare’s “A You Like It,” and portions from his 1,500 collection of personal books.
